What are dental crowns?

Our patients often tell us that they feel self-conscious about the condition of their teeth. We understand. We want to work with you to make sure you are happy with your smile, and confident to show it off to the world.

There are many reasons that we feel teeth don’t look their best. They can become misshapen, discoloured, or weakened by damage.

A crownSimple crown procedure utilizing a porcelain crown fused to non-precious metal and not involving complicated prep., or cap, will restore the strength of a tooth and give it the shape and, with our porcelain crowns, the colour of your natural teeth again. A crown can be used for a variety of reasons. You might simply want to improve the appearance of a tooth, where a filling has left it discoloured. Your tooth might have been damaged, or is needed to hold a bridge or denture in place. Teeth treated as part of root canal can often require the protection of a crown after the treatment. Your Dentist knows your teeth and will be able to advise you as to what is best for you.

Dental crowns are made of metal in black or silver, which can be covered in porcelain to make them look like your other teeth. We provide full porcelain crowns for a completely natural look, and find that the results are often difficult to distinguish from your natural teeth. Crowns can be handmade, completely from porcelain.

While the crown is being made, a temporary crown can be fitted. This won’t be as strong as the final cap but is strong enough to chew with. It’ll stop any niggly pain or issues, while our specialists get to work crafting you the perfect permanent solution.

Once your crown is ready, it will be fitted. This includes making sure that it fits as it should, and once you and your Dentist are happy the crown is glued into place.

A crown is made to last for many years and should be cared for in a similar way to your other healthy teeth, as part of your usual oral health routine. You need to make extra sure that the area around the crown is clean and your Dentist can give you some tips.

What will my crown be made from?
Crowns are made from many different materials. Your Dentist can advise you what is best for your teeth and it is also a personal preference depending on how you want the crown to look alongside your other teeth.
 
The most popular materials used are porcelain, composite resins and solid precious metal. Gold and palladium are the metals most commonly used, mainly at the back of the mouth where they can’t be seen.
Will my crown look completely natural?
Crowns used to have a gold core, which sometimes gave them dark margins which often didn’t look natural. We are now able to offer pure porcelain crowns as an alternative. Sometimes they require the Dentist to remove more of your tooth in preparation, and this is something they will discuss with you when talking about your options.
How long will the whole process take?
It normally takes two appointments. The first is for preparing the tooth, taking impressions, recording the shade of your teeth, and fitting a temporary crown. The second appointment is for cementing the permanent crown.
Is preparation for a crown painful?
No. Local anaesthetic is used and the preparation should feel no different from a filling. If a tooth does not have a nerve following root canal treatment, then a local anaesthetic may not be needed.
Are crowns noticeable?
Your dentist will match the crown as closely as possible to the other teeth, in size, shape and colour. This should ensure that it fits comfortably and looks natural.
How do I care for my crown?
The crown itself cannot decay, but decay can start where the edge of the crown joins the tooth. It is important to clean this area thoroughly as you would with your natural teeth. Your crown will last longer if you look after it well. Your Dentist will talk to you about how best to take care of your crowns and give you some tips.
How is a dental crown fitted?
Crowns can be used to restore teeth. Your dentist will have to prepare and shape the tooth surface in readiness for the crown. Don’t worry, this is painless as it is completed under local anaesthetic. Your dentist will also have to take an impression of your mouth to send to the laboratory. The laboratory will make the crown to fit your mouth precisely. Whilst this is happening you will have a temporary crown fitted to protect the underlying tooth.
