Can you drink coffee with veneers?

Drinking coffee with your new veneers

Your new veneers are likely to be a huge source of confidence for you, however it is also likely that they might provide some anxiety, with concerns over whether your current diet  and routine could cause damage and staining.

In the UK, plenty of us enjoy the morning routine of drinking a cup of coffee. Therefore, many patients with veneers question whether these drinks can have a negative effect on their new look or potentially damage their veneers.

Fortunately, as the veneers are made from porcelain, they are stain resistant, and are not usually affected by coffee in the same way a patient’s normal teeth are. A tooth’s enamelHard calcified tissue covering dentin of the crown of tooth. is porous thus making it susceptible to damage from coloured food and drinks such as tea and coffee, whilst a veneerIn the construction of crowns or pontics, a layer of tooth-colored material usually, but not limited to, composite, porcelain, ceramic or acrylic resin, attached to the surface by direct fusion, cemen’s porcelain is not. Therefore, these darker liquids can be consumed in moderation  without too much fear of staining your new veneers.

However, it is worth noting that overly excessive consumption of fizzy drinks or caffeine- based drinks such as coffee or tea, could have an effect over time. Excessive consumption can potentially damage the edge of your veneers as this is where they meet the enamel of your teeth.

Furthermore, having stain resistant veneers does not mean that patients are immune from poor oral health or further dental complications. We still recommend maintaining a healthy diet, regular upkeep of your dental hygiene including visits to the dentists and hygienist and using a straw if you do insist on fizzy drinks.
