We’ve all been there.

That moment when you try to decide whether to speak to someone about their bad breath. But what if someone is thinking the same about you?

Bad breath - or halitosisThe technical term for bad breath.@ - is a common problem. One in four adults will have it at some point. The good news is that most of the causes of bad breath are minor problems in the mouth. In some cases, however, it can be a symptom of something more serious.

This is where a trip to the dentist comes in. Regular check-ups with your dentist means that they will know you and your oral health. They can chat to you about any concerns you have and suggest steps to take.

Our dentists are equipped to treat bad breath and its causes. Seeing your dentist is the first step in identifying the problem and finding a solution.

Managing bad breath at home

There are also some things you can do in order to manage this condition at home.

Keeping your teeth and gums clean is the first step to tackling bad breath. As part of your daily routine you should brush your teeth twice a day, floss, and brush your tongue.

Other causes of bad breath could be smoking, drinking coffee, strongly flavoured or spicy food, and sugary food and drinks that can increase the bacteria in your mouth. Reducing these could help too.

You should also drink plenty of water and chew a sugar-free gum after meals.

However, if you notice any redness on your gums, or bleeding when brushing or flossing, alongside having bad breath, or your symptoms persist, then we suggest you make an appointment with your dentist.
