How do I apply wax to my braces?

When I buy wax for my braces, how do I apply it?

Braces are used in dentistry to help straighten teeth, realign the jaw and help create a new smile that can provide self-confidence. Whilst braces serve a great purpose, they can at first feel odd in your mouth, due to their unfamiliarity and parts of the brace can “rub” against the cheeks and lips.

To combat this issue, many patients opt to use dental wax. The wax can also be used if any brackets or wires from the brace become dislodged. The wax prevents the wires injuring your mouth and relieves pain.

In order to use the wax you need to:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly
  • Then brush your teeth in the area where the wax is to be applied
  • Take a pea sized piece of wax
  • Gently roll into a ball, flatten and then apply carefully to the problematic area

The wax will protect your gums from the metal by creating a buffer. It is entirely safe in your mouth, and eventually will break down and peel off once it has served its purpose.

You can purchase dental wax if you contact your dental surgery and if they don’t stock wax they may be able to recommend a local shop where you can purchase it from. If you have any questions about different brands or how it’s applied, speak with your dentist who will be able to recommend some further information.
