Wisdom teeth - how long will the pain last?
Wisdom teeth are the last of adult teeth to come through and are often associated with pain. Whilst this can be true, many people experience no issues at all with wisdom teeth. Discomfort caused by wisdom teeth is caused when the tooth has not fully broken through the gums and food and bacteria become trapped. If ignored this can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and even abscesses.
The dentist will recommend a series of antibiotics to combat this and reduce the pain by fighting the infection. However, if this does not work then the tooth may need to be removed. Unfortunately, there is not an exact timeline for wisdom tooth pain, as it can vary from person to person, and depending on the complication the pain could be more severe or more long lasting. Consequently, it is important to contact your dentist if your wisdom teeth are causing you discomfort.
If you have your wisdom teeth removed, then you will experience some pain such as swelling and bruising in the aftermath and this usually lasts for around 3 days, however in some cases it can extend to two weeks. Wisdom teeth can cause anxiety for many people and as a result, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. A dentist can inspect your teeth and let you know if your teeth have come through or whether there are any issues that need addressing.
