Can I eat popcorn with braces?

Popcorn - can I have it?

A night out at the cinema, or an evening at home with a film is a cornerstone of our culture and popcorn is often a key part of these activities. However, when you have braces there are certain foods and drinks that you will be unable to consume, and unfortunately popcorn is one of them.

Braces are intended to realign teeth or rectify gaps in your smile. As a result, popcorn can cause major issues due to the kernels. Even without braces, kernels can cause discomfort, but they can be removed using floss or brushing thoroughly. With braces, it can be more difficult to floss thoroughly and the kernels can get stuck in the teeth and ultimately lead to swelling gums and bleeding. If this happens, then your brace could need removing and the wires would have to be cleaned again. This can clearly have a long-term impact on the success of your braces.

Consequently, we recommend refraining from popcorn whilst you have braces and instead, sticking to healthier foods such as soft foods like pasta. Additionally, you can have some sweet treats like chocolate, provided it is consumed in moderation and you clean your teeth effectively afterwards.

Braces could be fitted for 18 months to a year on average and as a result, it is important to discuss diet options with your dentist before they are fitted. This way you will be able to avoid any potential problems with the treatment down the line.
