Can you use an electric toothbrush with braces?

I have braces - can I use an electric toothbrush?

Wearing braces can take some time getting used to, but will also require you to undertake a number of changes to your oral hygiene routine, whether that be brushing or flossing. In terms of brushing, you might be concerned that you will be unable to use your electric toothbrush, however you need not worry.

In order to brush with braces, you should follow these steps:

1.    Remove any removable parts of the brace and then carefully and slowly clean around the remaining structure.

2.    Use the electric toothbrush to move from the top of the tooth to the bottom as usual and make sure not to miss any teeth. The last thing you want is decayThe lay term for carious lesions in a tooth; decomposition of tooth structure. setting in whilst you have your braces in. Do this for three minutes and then carefully rinse and wash out your mouth to complete the process.

3.     You’ll also be able to include flossing when you have braces, as long as you take your time and thread the floss through the upper part of your teeth and carefully clean below the wiring. Make sure to use waxy floss to avoid any entanglement with the wires. Alternatively interdental brushes may be another option and easier to use whilst your brace is in your mouth.

If you would prefer to use a manual toothbrush then of course this is a possibility, but you shouldn’t worry about using your electric toothbrush.

If you have any concerns about your braces or your oral hygiene after having the braces fitted, please do not hesitate to contact your dentist and they will be happy to ease your worries.
