How to brush your teeth

How should you brush your teeth properly?

Most people believe they know how to brush their teeth. It is something we are taught from a very young age and yet many people still have the wrong technique. This can be borne out of poor dental routines, bad habits or even laziness. In this post, we will discuss some of the best methods of brushing your teeth and some tips you should follow daily.

•    Brushing regularly two times a day is vital, in fighting plaque and preventing decayThe lay term for carious lesions in a tooth; decomposition of tooth structure.. If left untreated, plaqueA soft sticky substance that accumulates on teeth composed largely of bacteria and bacterial derivatives. can spread causing cavities, gum disease and eventually tooth loss.

•    Before brushing, put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on the brush (ideally this would be an electric toothbrush as they are considerably more effective). Then brush in a circular pattern, gently cleaning each tooth, on the outer side of your tooth.

•    Then repeat this process on the inner side of the tooth.

•    Once you’ve finished you can spit out the foam and liquid, however, there is no need to rinse, as the fluoride in your mouth will continue to help clean the teeth.

•    Importantly, you should also be changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or if you have an electric one changing the head. Fresh bristles are far more effective in combatting plaque and will clean your mouth and teeth much more thoroughly.

For any additional tips, feel free to bring up any questions at your next appointment, as your dentist will be able to provide information about brushing and recommend the best toothbrush.
