What can you do before a dentist appointment?

Before a dentist appointment, what can I do?

Before going to the dentist, there a few steps you might want to take to get the most out of the appointment and equally, there are some you may want to avoid. Dental work can be expensive, and as a result it is important to take care of your teeth before and after a visit to the dentist.

Primarily, you can brush and floss your teeth before a dentist appointment and this will cause no problems. Secondly, we’re regularly asked whether a patient should eat prior to an appointment. We would suggest not eating for a few hours before seeing your dentist, as this could cause food to get lodged in the mouth and create additional work.

If you are anxious about visiting the dentist or a treatment you might be undergoing, we would recommend avoiding eating beforehand, just in case it gives you an unsettled stomach. Smokers are also asked to refrain from having a cigarette, ideally permanently, but at least before an appointment.

Importantly, if you are pregnant, slightly different rules apply to you and you should inform the dentist of your pregnancy so that treatments can be booked with this in mind. For example, if you are expecting, your heightened senses could mean you are unable to undergo some procedures, as anaesthetics can cause potential issues. It is worthwhile, speaking with your dentist about treatments that are still available to pregnant women.
