Sedation

Nervous patient visiting the dentist? 

A lot of people are worried about visiting the dentist. Usually, this is just slight nerves, a fear of the unknown and our friendly staff are able to put you at ease.

But what if it is more than that?

We understand that some people experience anxiety before, during and after treatment. This is perfectly normal. But we don’t want it to be the reason that your oral health suffers.

We are here to work with you to overcome your fears. And, as part of that, some of our Practices can offer sedation, to help you feel more comfortable during your check-ups and treatments. You can check if a Practice near you offers sedation by using our dentist practice search.

Sedation is given to you at the start of your appointment or treatment so that you feel relaxed and at ease. We find that for patients who have feared coming to the dentist in the past, this can help give them the confidence to be able to keep regular appointments and keep on top of their oral health. What is sedation?
Sedation is used if you have a great deal of anxiety about dental treatment. We will do everything we can to make you feel comfortable. If you are still anxious, then we can talk to you about using sedation as part of your trip to the dentist.
What sedation do you use?
Where sedation is used, we give you a mild Valium-type sedative which is given to you by a medically qualified anaesthetist or specially trained dentist while you are receiving treatment.
What does it feel like?
Sedation gives you a feeling of deep relaxation. You won’t feel anxious or worried about treatment, or remember the treatment afterwards.
How is it done?
The sedative is given to you intravenously. Anaesthetic injections are still given to make the mouth numb, but you are not aware of them being done.
Is sedation safe?
Yes. The sedation that we use and the way in which we give it to you is completely safe. There can be side effects, just as with any medicine, which is why you must have someone with you at your appointment.
How will I feel after sedation?
After being sedated you will be able to walk out of the dentists. You must bring someone with you to your appointment who can then take you home afterwards, just as a precaution.
 
You won’t be able to drive or operate potentially dangerous equipment for 24 hours after your appointment, so you need to think about when to is best to come and see us and what you’ll be doing the next day.
