First Steps to good dental health

Setting our children up with good oral health habits is essential for them throughout their life.

As soon as your child gets their first tooth, usually at around 6 months, they’re ready to start brushing their teeth and visiting the dentist.

These first visits can be done with your checkups, so your child can see you have your teeth examined, as well as have theirs done. At first, these appointments are a chance for the dentist to see inside their mouth and for them to become familiar with the dental Practice and what happens at a checkup.

Your dentist will let you know how often you should bring your child to the dentist, the same as they do for you.

We understand, especially if you are nervous of the dentist yourself, that it can be a little worrying to bring your child for a checkup. There is nothing to worry about. Just as with adult teeth, regular appointments ensure that your child’s teeth are properly cared for and any problems can be identified early and treated before they get any worse.

There are also things that you can do at home to start off with some great habits for their teeth.

  • Help your child to brush their teeth twice a day with a small toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. You should use a toothpaste suitable for your child’s age as this will have the right amount of fluoride in it for them.
  • Keep sugary snacks and drinks to a minimum and don’t give your child sugary drinks, like squash, in a baby’s bottle.
  • If you use a dummy, don’t dip it in anything sugary to encourage your child to take it. Consider phasing out the dummy from 1 year to help your child’s teeth develop properly.
