Can you eat after whitening your teeth?

After whitening your teeth, what can you eat?

You may be concerned after having your teeth whitened about the side effects of eating and drinking however you have nothing to fear as long as you follow your dentist’s instructions and avoid certain items.

In the first 24 hours after your treatment you should avoid consuming any dark drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine or soft drinks which could potentially stain the tooth and undo the process. Furthermore, you’ll also have to be considerate about the food you eat, with certain dishes such as spaghetti bolognese, red meats and dishes with soy sauce to be avoided.

However, this doesn’t mean you need to fast for the next day as there are plenty of options available post-treatment. Potatoes, chicken, fish & chips as well as white sauces can all be eaten as they shouldn’t cause staining.

You’ll even be able to drink milk and even alcohol providing it’s white, such as a wine or clear (e.g. gin & tonic).

It’s always advisable to take extra care after teeth whitening so that you can keep your new pearly white teeth well maintained and to avoid the risk of staining.

Your dentist will be able to advise more about foods to avoid eating at your appointment.
