Implants - why do they take so long?

Dental implant treatment can be a long process, however the results can be life changing both, in terms of your confidence and your daily oral health. As a result, the extra time the treatment takes can be offset by the eventual results.

The reason why the treatment takes so long is that there are a number of complex steps and careful planning to make sure that implantA device specially designed to be placed surgically within or on the mandibular or maxillary bone has a long life and is stable.

The first step in receiving your implants is a consultation with your dentist. They will talk you through the process and examine your mouth to see which type of implant you require, based on the amount of jawbone you have.

At your first treatment session, the implants are placed into the mouth, under the gums, after which the gum needs time to heal. This process is known as osseointegration and can last between three and six months.

During this stage, the implant must merge and integrate with the bone much like natural tooth would do. In order to ensure the survival of the new implant and its stability, usually patients have to wait for this period to finish before the final steps can occur. Additionally, this stage can be prolonged by other oral health issues such as smoking or gum disease.

With the osseointegration completed, you will then visit your dentist for a further session and they will then add the final restoration to the top of the implant and your teeth will feel as good as new.
