What are dentures?

Dentures, what are they?

Losing your teeth can often be traumatic or worrying experiencing. Whilst as you get older losing teeth is more natural, poor dental hygiene can result in teeth being lost prematurely. However, dentures can provide a great way to regain control over your eating as they help you chew and speak more effectively.

Dentures are false teeth that can be removed and are made from a variety of materials such as metal, or plastic. Before having your dentures, the dentist will take a mould of your gums so that the false teeth fit perfectly and help replace missing teeth.

There are two types of dentures: partial and complete dentures. Complete dentures are designed to replace the entirety of your top or bottom teeth, whilst partial dentures are for gums that are only missing a few teeth. Upper dentures cover the roof of your mouth whilst the lower dentures are shaped like a horseshoe and sit on the bottom gums without impacting the use of your tongue.

Unlike dental implants, which are fixed to the bone of your jaw, dentures can be removed, however as a result they need to clean and cared for every day. The best option is to take the dentures out at night and place them in water to clean.

The best way to know if you need dentures is to visit your dentist regularly so that your dentist can keep track of your teeth’s health. If you have any concerns or problems with missing teeth, you should ask your dentist for their recommendation.
