Dental Check Ups

Make sure you're always smiling with regular dental check-ups.

We get it. Regular check-ups with a dentist might not be everyone’s favourite pastime. You might not be skipping into your local dental practice for a check-up. But seeing your dentist regularly is essential for healthy teeth and gums. And we find that more you visit your local practice and get to know your dentist, the less you’ll worry when you do need to visit.

We encourage our patients to come and see their dentist regularly. That way small problems or changes in your teeth and gums can be seen to and sorted. Don’t wait until you have a problem.

A check-up usually lasts around 15 mins. During your check-up, your dentist will look at your teeth and gums and ask questions to find out more about you and your smile. They are there to get to know you and your teeth and to help you look after them.

To keep you smiling, we recommend you have regular appointments with your dentist. Your dentist can advise as to how often you should come for a check-up, usually between 3 months and 2 years, depending on the health of your teeth.

Patient in dentist's chair

I have had a fear of dentists and needles for many years and this dental surgery is beginning to restore my faith in dentists. Any treatment is always explained to me and the dentists always make me feel comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to do ahead of a dental check-up?
It’s always a good idea to brush your teeth before a check-up. This makes sure you’ve got all those little bits out of your teeth, so your dentist can get a good look. And they always appreciate the effort!

Make sure you are on time for your appointment. For first time patients might want to be there a little early to fill out any forms required.

If you have any anxiety about visiting the dentist, then let your dentist know in advance so they can help put you at ease from the start.
Where is my nearest dentist?
With Practices throughout the South of England, you’re never far from a Colosseum Dental Practice.

What happens at a dentist check-up?
Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums thoroughly and ask questions to find out more about your habits and your teeth.

Your dentist is here to work with you to keep you in the best oral health possible. They will talk you through any treatment you need and chat to you about the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. They will also let you know when you need to come back next.

How often should I be going to the dentist?
Regular check-ups are important and your dentist can advise you as to how often you should have your teeth checked.

This could be from between every three months, to every two years, depending on how healthy your teeth are and the chance of problems in the future. Patients that might be deemed high-risk are advised to visit more frequently. High-risk includes patients who are:
  • Smokers
  • Pregnant women
  • Have gum disease
  • Diabetics
  • Patients who tend to get cavities
  • Patients with a weak immune response
How long does a dentist check-up take?
Having a dental check-up doesn’t take long at all but it does vary depending on whether it’s your first visit to the dentist or a follow up examination. It also depends on the condition of your mouth.  A dental check-up is a very important part of dental care as it forms the plan for your treatment and allows you to discuss your needs and issues with your dentist.
How much is a check-up at the dentist?
Currently (February 2019), under the NHS in England a dental examination is part of the Band 1 charge and it is £21.60. if you are having your examination privately, these do vary depending on your local area. Please check with your local practice who will be happy to give you details.
What happens during your check-up?
No dental check-up is the same, but you can usually expect that your dentist may:
  • Ask you about your medical history and if you’re currently taking any medication.
  • Ask whether you smoke or drink alcohol as this may be a contributing factor to any oral healthcare issues your dentist spots
  • Ask about your diet as this may be impacting your teeth
  • Ask how often and how you clean your teeth e.g. do you brush twice a day? Do you floss? How long do you brush for
  • Examine your mouth, teeth and gums and check for any potential oral health issues
  • Explain any issues that he/she has spotted during the examination and potential treatment (as well as costs)
Will I need a dental x-ray at my check-up?
In some instances, your dentist will take an x-ray of your mouth so that they can check for any issues that aren’t readily visible during the examination. You’ll simply be asked to bite down on a specialised piece of plastic placed in between your teeth whilst the x-ray is taken. Many Colosseum Dental’s practices use digital x-rays, which emit up to 90% less radiation – meaning they are quicker to process and easier to store.
Will I need to book another appointment?
If your dentist has recommended treatment, then you’ll be asked to book in advance. This can usually be done immediately after the check-up at the reception. If you’d like to think about your options, you can always ring or email your local practice later to make the appointment.

We usually encourage patients to make an advance booking of their next check-up (often 6 – 12 months ahead) so that the patient can pick a convenient time for them before our appointments calendar gets too busy.

Is a dental check-up free?
You don’t have to pay for NHS dental treatment if you are in any of the below categories:
  • Under the age of 18 or under 19 and in full-time education
  • Being treated in an NHS hospital where the treatment is being carried out by the hospital dentist
  • Receiving low income benefits
  • Pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months.
