Adult teeth - how many do we have?

Your teeth are one of the most important parts of your body for the simple fact that they help you speak and eat food which allows you to live a comfortable and healthy life. The exterior of a tooth is made from enamelHard calcified tissue covering dentin of the crown of tooth. which is amongst the strongest substance in the whole body. The enamel also protects other parts of the tooth which may be more sensitive. Dentine makes up the interior of the tooth, and whilst not as strong as the enamel, supports with day-to-day functions like chewing and biting. However, despite their importance, people often forget how many teeth they have.

As children, we tend to have 20 milk teeth, which naturally fall out to make room for our adult teeth and by the age of 12-14 most children have a full set of adult teeth. Initially, adults have 28 teeth with the four wisdom teeth growing later. This means adults have 32 teeth in full. There are four types of tooth in the mouth, the aforementioned wisdom teeth, incisors, molars and premolars. Wisdom teeth can cause pain to some people and as a result, some choose to have these teeth removed.

If you have any further questions regarding your teeth such as how strong they are, whether to have any removed or if you are concerned about perhaps not having the full set of 32 by a certain age, feel free to contact your dentist or raise the issue at your next appointment.
